Course Description:
Introduction to Educating Exceptional Children and Youth
provides a comprehensive look at the complex realm of
special education services. This course will examine the
many facets that are associated with the legally
appropriate identification, assessment and instructional
delivery of programs set forth by the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Learners will explore
a variety of disability categories and demonstrate
rudimentary familiarity with instructional interventions
that assist in providing a Free Appropriate Public
Education (FAPE) to special students.
Class Design:
This is an online course designed for independent adult
learners. All assignments and course competencies are
completed via the online format. There are two onsite
sessions required in this course, an orientation and
closing symposium that will take place at North Georgia
RESA, Ellijay, Georgia
Course Goals/Objectives
(Goals)
The Learner will demonstrate the ability to:
(a)
Locate and cite the laws and rules that govern the
education of students with disabilities
(b)
appropriately identify possible students
with disabilities within the regular and special
education settings
(c)
complete appropriate due process paperwork for the
referral of identified students to the SST or IEP
team
(d)
actively participate in eligibility determinations,
psychological evaluation meetings and IEP teams
(e)
understand and apply the various disciplinary rules for
students with disabilities
(f)
demonstrate the ability to modify and accommodate
instruction for a variety of disabilities according to
state and federal mandates

strategies for exceptional learners through:

due process regarding the education of education of
students with disabilities

I.
Performance Measurement
The Learner will demonstrate course completion by:
(a). completing all required tasks and online
assignments in a quality manner
(b). developing and submitting a complete portfolio of
requested items
(c) earning a grade of 70 or better on each weekly
Competency Demonstration
(d) attending the onsite orientation and closing
symposium?s (mandatory) at North Georgia RESA
(e) Attempting to earn a total course performance
score of 1000 with a minimum score of 950 to be 0 to be 0 to be
eligible for credit
II.
Verification of Completion
Learners must complete all of the required components of
the course in order to receive credit. NO PARTIAL
CREDITS WILL BE PROVIDED. The Instructor will provide
written verification of successful course completion at
the onsite closing symposium.
Additional Course Requirements
The Learner is responsible for notifying instructor in
advance of issues that may result in difficulties
completing the course as outlined. As an adult learner,
you will be treated with respectful independence.
